The Monday Night Concert Series features “The Art of the Duo” with Andy Brown and Russ Philips at 7 p.m. Monday, June 12, at the Oak Park Arms retirement community, 408 S. Oak Park Ave. The Monday night concerts are free and open to the public.
Based in Chicago, guitarist Andy Brown has played professionally for more than 20 years. He works at many of the area’s finest jazz venues with his own bands as well as plays his unique brand of solo jazz guitar. Brown plays solo guitar every Thursday at The Green Mill and leads his quartet every Wednesday at Andy’s Jazz Club.
Married to vocalist Petra van Nuis, Andy has worked with many of Chicago’s finest singers. Andy accompanied Barbra Streisand when she appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show in 2009.
Russ Philips, Jr., lives in the Chicago area with his wife, vocalist Jeannie Lambert, and he performs with his own six-piece ensemble at Andy’s Jazz Club every Thursday evening.
His education on the trombone started with his father Russ Philips, Sr. who played with Louis Armstrong’s All Stars. Russ Jr.’s life as a trombonist began backstage as a four-year-old listening to his dad play with the All Stars. His musical education continued through grammar school, high school and into college and included study with Frank Crisafulliof the Chicago Symphony.
The Monday Night Concert Series, which is free and open to the public, is dedicated to presenting small ensembles, primarily solos, duos and trios.
The Oak Park Arms is a rental retirement community that provides independent and assisted living apartments and a full schedule of activities and services. Furnished apartments are also available for a short-term stay – a weekend, a week, a month or longer.
