Sitting Pretty at the Oak Park Arms

Bench donation to Oak Park ArmsKianna Gill, 14, and Emory Reichmann-Crowley, 13, both cadettes of Girl Scout Troop 41525, planned and executed a multi-step project, the creation of a pretty wooden bench, for the residents of the Oak Park Arms retirement community, 408 S. Oak Park Ave.

They bought a metal frame and lumber, cut the wood and assembled the bench, sanded and finally painted the bench with pretty flowers and the word, “Celebrate.”

A presentation ceremony and ribbon cutting took place on Sunday, February 12, 2017. Gill and Reichmann-Crowley were beaming with pride, and the residents were very appreciative. The girls made cookies to share with the residents during the presentation event.

“I feel really good about helping the residents out and putting in a lot of time to a project that will make them happier,” Reichmann-Crowley said. “We want to thank Desi (Vasquez, social director at the Oak Park Arms) and our troop leaders Julie O’Shea and Stacy Evenson.”

“I am proud to have made the bench and donated it,” Gill said “I feel happy. It was lots of fun and helping out the Oak Park Arms.”

Both girls earned a Silver Award for the project which had to be a minimum of 50 hours of work, and it had to benefit the community. The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest award a Girl Scout cadette can earn.

Gill is an eighth grader at Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School, and Reichmann-Crowley is in eighth grade at Percy Julian Middle School. Both schools are in Oak Park.
