The Cook County State’s Attorney’s office will present a program titled, “Consumer Fraud Targeting Senior Citizens,” at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at the Oak Park Arms Senior Living located at 408 S. Oak Park Avenue, Oak Park. The program is free and open to the public.
The guest speaker is Monica Kreymer Lamphere, Assistant State’s Attorney, Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, Consumer Fraud Unit. Her presentation will focus on scams that target senior citizens, particularly in Cook County. Topics include home repair fraud, Medicare fraud, and impersonation scams. After the presentation, participants should be able to identify common red flags that accompany scams.
Fraud is big business in America, taking in about $100 billion a year according to the U.S. Office of Consumer Affairs. Law enforcement officials believe that seniors are among the most targeted.
Social workers, attorneys and law enforcement have identified the following reasons that seniors are at greater risk of fraud: more leisure time, isolation, anxiety, and more discretionary income.
Kreymer Lamphere has been an Assistant State’s Attorney with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, Consumer Fraud Unit, for more than five years. She prosecutes civil and criminal cases under various consumer protection laws of the State of Illinois.
