Senior safety alert: free self-defense class offered to Oak Park seniors – Nov. 4

The Oak Park Arms Senior Living Community is partnering with Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart to host a class titled “Senior Self-Defense and Safety” at 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 4, for residents and seniors in the community held at Oak Park Arms Senior Living, 408 S. Oak Park Ave. This free event aims to empower older adults with essential knowledge and practical skills for personal safety.

The session will be led by instructors from the Cook County Sheriff’s Police Training Academy. They will cover critical topics highly relevant to senior safety, including preventative measures against:

  • Carjackings
  • Home Invasion
  • Street Robberies
  • Violence in Public Spaces

“The safety and security of our senior community is paramount,” said Renee Steingaard, director of leasing and resident engagement at the Oak Park Arms. “This collaboration with Sheriff Dart’s office ensures that our residents and neighbors receive top-tier, actionable advice directly from law enforcement professionals, helping them feel more confident and secure in their daily lives.”

Space is limited to the first 30 participants, and registration is required. The senior safety class is free and open to all seniors age 55 and older. Due to the interactive nature of the training, attendees are requested to wear comfortable clothing and gym shoes.
